BOTANICAL SOLUTIONS FOR UNRESOLVED THYROID SYMPTOMS: PART 1
In honor of Thyroid Awareness Month, we’ve invited thyroid patient advocate and bestselling author Mary Shomon (www.mary-shomon.com) to share her thoughts about the best botanicals for thyroid patients with unresolved symptoms and health issues. This is Part 1 of her two-part Thyroid Awareness Month special article. You’ll find Part 2 here.
– Viana Muller, PhD
As a thyroid patient advocate, I’ve gotten questions like these every day for more than 25 years. Everyone seems to want natural solutions to their health challenges, and the 20+ million people in the U.S. with thyroid disease are no exception.
January is Thyroid Awareness Month, and to help spread awareness, I have an important message for my fellow thyroid patients. If you had surgery to remove your thyroid gland, radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment for hyperthyroidism, or Hashimoto’s disease or hypothyroidism with a poorly functioning or atrophied thyroid, you aren’t producing enough – or any — thyroid hormone! And we need thyroid hormone to survive! And despite the ads, books, and marketing pitches, no natural supplement, vitamin, mineral, or food can replace the thyroid hormone your cells, tissues, organs, and glands need to function.
That means that for most of us with hypothyroidism – the most common thyroid problem in the U.S. – prescription medication is not optional; it’s actually essential. At the same time, even with treatment, many of us continue to struggle with unresolved issues like fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, low libido, other hormonal imbalances, high cholesterol, or insulin resistance. That’s when conventional medicine often fails us, with little to offer besides more pharmaceuticals. And hormone replacement drugs, statins, and diabetes medications usually come with a long list of additional side effects – and a hefty price tag! (And there’s another problem: these drugs often don’t work the way we want them to!)
That’s when, in my opinion, it’s time to consider a more holistic approach that brings the best natural solutions into the mix to help safely resolve continuing symptoms. But how do you get reliable information about natural approaches? If you ask conventional, allopathic physicians, many will tell you that taking vitamins and supplements for any health condition is like “flushing money down the toilet.” On the other side, some holistic and natural practitioners claim that all pharmaceuticals are overpriced poisons and that you should “flush your prescription drugs down the toilet” because natural solutions are always better. The truth is not that black and white, and the whole issue can be totally confusing for thyroid patients who simply want to feel better but don’t know where to start!
For years, I’ve had opportunities to promote or endorse many supplements, and I just don’t do it. What I’ve chosen to do instead is to selectively recommend only those supplements that have scientific evidence behind them and that have personally worked for my coaching clients and readers – and me. I call it “patient evidence-based medicine,” and it’s served me well all these years.
Among my very small list of recommended supplements for thyroid patients are products from Whole World Botanicals. There are four key reasons why I use and recommend their products.
- Whole World Botanicals is committed to ethically sourcing its botanicals from indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon and Andes.
- Their products are all authentic, organic or wildcrafted, traditionally grown and harvested, and prepared the way nature intended.
- Whole World Botanicals’ co-founder Dr. Viana Muller is a thyroid patient herself. During her long relationship with the thyroid community, she’s integrated her personal experience and years of input from thyroid patients – including me – into her products. As a result, thousands of thyroid patients successfully take her botanicals!
- Finally, and most importantly, Whole World Botanicals products are potent and therapeutic-grade, meaning they work – quickly! And because a little goes a long way, they’re also affordable. I could write an entire book about the botanicals, but as a starting point, I’d like to give you a very brief rundown of my favorite botanicals for unresolved thyroid symptoms.
Royal Maca is authentic, organic Peruvian Maca – unlike most Maca on the market, which is grown in China and contaminated with toxins. Royal Maca is heated by a process called “gelatinization,” making Royal Maca truly thyroid-safe – unlike most available Maca products, which are raw, can slow your thyroid function, and promote thyroid enlargement (goiter).
What can Royal Maca do for thyroid patients?
You’ll get so many benefits from Royal Maca!
- Royal Maca helps relieve fatigue and increase energy
- Royal Maca supports sex hormone balance and adrenal function
- Royal Maca improves libido
- Royal Maca increases energy
- Royal Maca improves brain fog and mood issues
- Royal Maca combats insulin resistance
- Royal Maca supports better bone health
Part 2 of this post includes more details about the benefits of Royal Maca for thyroid patients and helps you decide which specific Royal Maca product could be the best fit for you.
Another of my recommended botanicals for thyroid patients is Royal Camu, which comes from freshly harvested Peruvian Camu-Camu fruit, the most potent food source of Vitamin C. Milligram for milligram, Royal Camu is 50 times more potent than oranges or ascorbic acid supplements!
Most thyroid disease in the U.S. results from autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune thyroid disease can leave you with a dysregulated immune system and low defense against infection. This is where Royal Camu shines! This Vitamin C-rich botanical:
- Royal Camu improves your immunity against viruses and infections
- Royal Camu quickly improves mood and resolves mild depression. 1– often within 24 hours!
An extra benefit – the Vitamin C in Royal Camu enhances the absorption of your thyroid medications – like levothyroxine – when taken together. 2
Royal Chanca Piedra™ Liver-Gall Bladder Support Extract
Patients with hypothyroidism can have impaired digestion. The double-strength Royal Chanca Piedra™ extract capsules or liquid extract help improve your ability to digest fatty foods. Elevated cholesterol levels are typical in thyroid patients. Royal Chanca Piedra™ also helps you maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
Your doctor may have told you that you have abnormal liver enzyme levels – like elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or aspartate aminotransferase (AST). This is common in thyroid patients and indicates stress on your liver and an increased risk of a fatty liver, also known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.3 Royal Chanca Piedra™ helps promote healthy liver enzyme levels.4
Finally, hypothyroidism promotes calcium formation, increasing your risk of kidney, bladder, and gall stones. Royal Chanca Piedra™ supports healthy calcium metabolism and distribution.
Thyroid patients are at a significantly increased risk of high glucose (blood sugar), insulin resistance, and, eventually, Type 2 diabetes. By helping you reduce your blood sugar and helping you maintain healthier insulin levels, Royal Abuta can help reduce your risk of insulin resistance and improve your glucose tolerance. 5
Carbohydrate metabolism is often impaired in people with hypothyroidism, contributing to elevated blood sugar and weight gain. Royal Abuta improves your digestion of carbohydrates – especially starches, sugar, and white flour.
An added benefit: Royal Abuta reduces your cravings for carbohydrates and sugar, making it easier to manage your blood sugar and weight.
