HAVE YOU HEARD OF DESMODIUM?

By Teresa Barrington,

The year 2020 changed the ways many of us work. Millions of us sit at our own desks in front of screens connected to our employer via the Internet. By 2025, estimates say 36.2 million Americans in the workforce will be working remotely.1 If you are one of those millions, like I am, you know that after just a few hours of working, eyes get strained and muscles can tense up. A larger screen helped my eyes, but regularly standing to stretch did not give lasting relief to my aching muscles. It’s common knowledge that frequent and long-term use of muscle relaxants and pain killers can damage the stomach and liver, not to mention that thousands of deaths in America each year are caused by their side effects.

I needed something safe and effective to help me work more comfortably. I found a solution in Royal Desmodium™. Within 10 minutes of taking this supplement, I will audibly sigh as the tension leaves my muscles! It’s a wonderful physical feeling that lasts a good long time for me. If you or someone you know would like to experience that, read on…

Not many people in the United States have heard of Desmodium. Despite being a hidden jewel here, in other parts of the world this therapeutic botanical is well-known and frequently used.

Desmodium adscendens, also called Desmodium a, (not to be confused with another less-effective species of Desmodium that grows in the Andes) is a low-growing rainforest plant found in South America, the Caribbean, and West Africa.

This lovely green plant hugs the ground, grows 6-12 inches tall, and produces yellow or purple flowers. As is often the case, indigenous people name a plant according to its health benefits. In the Caribbean, this plant is called “Strong Back.”

The Strong Back name comes from the botanical’s relaxing, pain-relieving effect on muscle tissue. The World Health Organization reports that 50-70% of people in industrialized countries will experience low back pain in their lifetime.2 Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints doctors receive from their patients. Plus, it’s estimated that 16 million adults in the U.S. experience chronic back pain. The costs of our unrelenting and recurring sore backs may be as high as $12 billion per year because of lost work and disability payments.3

I’ve spent most of my life with back pain, mostly from structural misalignment for which I get chiropractic adjustments and massages. Getting treatments every day is not an option for me financially, so taking Royal Desmodium™ is an affordable way to mitigate the muscle tension between visits. Interestingly, one scientific study determined that Desmodium can also take muscles out of spasm, which is an intensely painful experience. Many people have successfully used Desmodium for relaxing muscles close to an injury and for relieving menstrual cramps. So, if you or someone you know struggles with muscle pain or tendon pain, Desmodium may be a great option.

Like many rainforest plants, Desmodium has multiple therapeutic benefits. Remember the potential harm pharmaceutical muscle relaxants and pain killers can have on the liver? Scientific studies show that Desmodium helps maintain healthy liver function, including supporting healthy liver enzyme levels. This finding brings me comfort, knowing I can safely take Desmodium as needed on days when I have more pain.

In addition to relaxing tense muscles and supporting the liver, Desmodium has several other scientifically documented therapeutic uses, including benefits for the lungs and the ability to help control allergic reactions. Watch for the upcoming blog on Desmodium’s other therapeutic uses.

You may be wondering by now where you can get a product that contains Desmodium adscendens. The co-founders of Whole World Botanicals were so impressed with the properties of this plant which they collected in the Peruvian rainforest that they decided to make it available in the United States. They bought 80 acres of Peruvian rainforest land in order to wildcraft it, thus guaranteeing its purity and to make certain there would always be a plentiful supply. Their Royal Desmodium™ extract has a 1:1 concentration, which means it is strong and potent. One dose (90-120 drops) is sufficient to ease my stiff muscles as I navigate my workday. I even found that it helped me through a bout with a potent virus in 2020 by easing the intense muscle aches and protecting my lungs. I like the taste straight from the dropper, but it also can be added to water or put into tea. (In Peru, the indigenous people simmer the leaves to make a medicinal tea.) When shopping for it, you may find Royal Desmodium™ in several areas of a health store, including the liver, lung/allergy or pain sections. It’s also available on the Whole World Botanicals website.

Of all the supplements that I use and recommend, Whole World Botanicals’ Royal Desmodium™ is the only one that sits on my desk, ready at a moment’s notice to bring me relief. I gratefully am a more productive and cheerful worker because of it.
