Natural Skin and Wound Care

Many different conditions can affect the health of one’s skin, the largest organ of the body. Many manifestations of less than healthy skin include pimples, hives, rashes, warts, precancerous and cancerous lesions, warts, and wounds that are slow to heal, including ulcers, both internal and external. These conditions have diverse causes, some well-known and others not well understood. Whole World Botanicals offers several products based on therapeutic botanicals which can significantly promote the health of skin.

What can Clear Up Acne?

Pimples and acne are common conditions among teenagers due to their hormonal changes and as such reflect a lack of hormonal balance, as a primary cause.  Secondary causes include high stress levels, which in turn are related to hormone imbalance.  A therapeutic quality of Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) given at the right dosage for the individual is probably the single most effective herbal intervention to promote skin health in people suffering from acne.  Acne most commonly reflects an overly high testosterone level and Maca can help bring the body’s hormones into balance.

Causes of Hives and Rashes

Many hives and rashes reflect an allergic reaction to some food or dietary supplement, including a particular sensitivity to arginine.  Desmodium is an effective botanical to counteract many allergic reactions.

Other rashes, such as psoriasis and eczema have causes that are not well understood. Clinically, some cases of psoriasis have been linked to post-partum or peri-menopausal hormonal changes in women and have cleared up almost completely after a therapeutic quality of Maca root has been taken for a few months.  Eczema appears to be linked in part to poor liver function and the Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus spp) herb is well studied for its ability to promote liver health.

Getting Rid of Warts

Warts, while not a disease, or inconvenient and embarrassing.  These skin afflictions clinically have been known to reduce in size and even disappear when Camu-Camu (Myrciaria dubia) has been consumed on a daily basis or Dragon’s Blood (Croton lechleri sap) has been taken both internally and externally.  As always, it is important to consult your physician when any type of skin blemish has occurred in order to get a diagnosis and to get medical treatment for it, if this is warranted.

Wounds That Won’t Heal

Wounds that do not heal readily have different causes, including a high blood sugar level, characteristic of diabetics.  Consult your physician if this is your situation.

Slow wound healing can also be due to other factors, such as poor nutritional status.  A missionary working in the Peruvian rainforest for decades with his wife doing literacy work got a wound on his foot that would not heal.  He had tried antibiotic ointment to no avail and it went on for weeks.  Whole World Botanical’s Co-Founder Viana Muller noticed that his diet was high in meat and starches and low in vegetables.

She suggested that he add carrots, cabbage and onions (the only vegetables available to him) to his diet on a daily basis, as well as taking handfuls of vitamin C tablets.  Within a week his foot had healed.  Camu-Camu is, of course, far superior to synthetic Vitamin C tablets to assist in wound healing. In addition, Dragon’s Blood, a red sap from a tree which grows in the Peruvian rainforest, is famous for its wound healing properties. Scientific evidence backs this up, including studies on the healing of stomach ulcers with the help of this botanical.

Traditionally Dragon’s Blood is used for stopping the copious flow of blood from deep cuts caused by a machete accident. But it also is equally useful (again anecdotally) in healing cuts that occur on parts of the body that don’t have much blood flow to naturally heal the wound, such as cuts on the bony parts of fingers.

Scientific evidence shows that Dragon’s Blood is helpful in maintaining the DNA of healthy cells.  Although this research does not relate specifically to the skin, traditionally Dragon’s Blood is widely used for all types of skin issues, including sensitive spots on the skin (possibly pre-cancerous).

What to Do for Burns

Dragon’s Blood is also helpful, anecdotally, in healing burns. One of Whole World Botanicals’ employees burned her wrist badly taking food out of the oven.  It didn’t heal for weeks because the wound was deep and it kept opening up again as she bent her wrist in the normal course of a day.  Finally she started dabbing Dragon’s Blood on her wrist a couple of times a day.  Within two days the healing process was well advanced and all traces of the wound were gone in less than a week.

Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) has been shown in studies to help skin DNA regenerate in vitro after over-exposure to UV rays.
